School Lunches

by Liza Fulton on August 20, 2010

Save money by packing your own lunch…… whether you are in kindergarten, high school or college – a healthy lunch will cost less and help you feel and think better throughout the day.  A tried or restless brain cannot concentrate and focus to learn well.

If you are tired after eating lunch you probably had too many carbohydrates (white bread, pizza, french fries, chips or pasta) and if you are wired-up and can’t sit still you may have eaten too much sugar.  Soda pop is a huge problem as are sweet juicy type drinks – besides, who needs all the calories anyway?  Pure water is a good choice for all of us.

Stick to a lunch made with real foods – fruits, vegetables, protein and good fats.  And speaking of fat… did you know your brain is over 50% fat and Omega 3 fats are essential to proper brain function.  You can get Omega 3′s from lots of foods like cold water fish (salmon or sardines), nuts like almonds and from olive oil.  Taking a daily Omega 3 supplement is also a good idea as every cell in your body needs healthy fat to keep the cell walls flexible and to aid with inter-cellular communication.  WOW – who said fat was bad… just bad fat is bad!   Good fat actually makes food taste better and helps to make you feel full – so you can eat less and be satisfied.

So, Keep Your Fork and feed yourself a nutritious homemade lunch.  Your body and your brain will thank you!
